Into October

Hello everyone,

I hope you have had a nice week and have taken advantage of what must certainly be the last of the good weather for a while. The nights are most definitely drawing in, so lots of opportunities to work on our photoshop skills.

Anyway I have quite a few extra things to include in the newsletter this week so I had best get on with it. Well what an incredibly busy -photographically speaking- week lies ahead:

Monday evening some members are helping HECC Sport take publicity shots, as a thank-you for their giving us space for one of our shoots over the Summer. If you are interested in helping out please contact Andrew before midday.

Tuesday morning 9:00 is a theatre group visit to Contexture Theatre Company’s ‘s dress-rehersal of “Journey’s End” at the Rhodes. We will be shooting, processing, and printing for the show publicity shots before we leave. We will have a Dye-Sublimation printer on site, but if you have your laptop to process your own shots that will help.

Tuesday evening we’re looking forward to a talk from one of our favourite judges: David Steel will be talking about his trip down Route 66, expect great travel shots of Americana

Jackson Square have commented what a great success the exhibition opposite Starbucks has been with strong positive feedback from the public — even the security guards commented how well it was received. If your picture was a part of the Jackson Square Exhibition, please come to pick up the print on Tuesday evening, or arrange to collect it/them from Andrew. The prints are on a plastic board, and still have Velcro style “Hook” tape along 2 edges: for re-hanging you may want this
20mm x 25m’s Adhesive White Loop Tape Only (Velcro equivalent)

Saturday Evening is the Worldwide Photowalk in Colchester, if you would like to take part in this global event, please make sure you pre- R E G I S T E R. With regards to this event if you are going to this and are able to offer a lift to Stephanie please let me know ASAP, she would be extremely grateful.

I really hope everyone enjoyed the workshop on Tuesday. If you took some shots and would like them forwarded to our models Gabriella Morgan and Alistair Gunn please use the following Dropbox link

Finally a note regarding the Rugby festival I mentioned on Tuesday. This event is in 3 weeks time and I feel that this is a little too shorter notice for us to pull this off and do it justice. I have therefore let the organisers know that we would be unable to help this particular time. Although there will be further opportunities in the future. If this is something you would like to help out with, please let me know.

Kind Regards

August weekly update

Hi all

There is a change to this week in the programme. We are now going to do a World War 1 themed photo shoot in conjunction with Contexture, a theatre company based in Bishop’s Stortford. There is the chance that your photograph could be used as the poster for Contexture’s play about boys going to war, coming up in the autumn. We have two teenage boys as models and Contexture are bringing authentic uniforms for them. They would like something similar to the sunset portraits we took recently, so I’m thinking we will head to the same location. This was near the cricket fields in Bishop’s Stortford, Address is Cricketfield Lane, Bishops Stortford. We will meet at 7:30pm and will head towards the hill at Dane O’Coys Road. Remember your insect repellant!

Andrew has also asked me to let you know about a fantastic opportunity to photograph some amazing moths:-

Moth night
Scheduled: 16 Aug 2014, 20:30 to 22:00
Location: Millfield Lane, Little Hadham, A120 between Little Hadham & Tesco
A moth trap extravaganza by Kono Forgham.
This event will be cancelled if it’s raining.

See you Tuesday,

Weekly Update

Hi all

This week we are going to go to the Three Houseshoes in Spellbrook for a bite to eat (or just a drink) and a catch up. This is going to take the place of the meal in a few weeks as we may have something very cool we can do on that week. If anyone knows or has any teenagers that would like to dress up in World War 1 gear and potentially have their picture on a poster around B/Stortford, let Emma know.

The winner of Photo of the Month this month is Karen with her fantastic picture taken at Hopleys.

Hello from the Chairman…again

Hello everyone on this very sunny Monday morning,

So the Judging for the exhibition has taken place and the winners will be announced tomorrow night at club. Exciting stuff. The winners will be presented with their trophies and certificates at the dinner which Jean is still taking orders for, so don’t miss out, get your name down.

On the back of that Janet is still waiting for last years winners to return trophies and cups so if you could return them ASAP that would be appreciated and if you could return them shiny and clean even better 😉

Those of you who have entered prints and have been unsuccessful will be able to collect your prints Tuesday night at club as well, so please bring your print boxes/bags etc to take them home.

I have attached a picture which I received this morning from the sweatshirt embroidery company which they sent me after I have badgered them for an update on our order!!! at least we know they are being done, even if it is taking a lifetime.jumpers

Tomorrow night is a practical night so bring along your cameras, laptops and of course questions that you need answering, please don’t be shy, there is bound to be someone there who can help you out with any queries you may have and if we don’t know we can always look it up together and we all learn something.

Two dates for your diary:

April 22nd, its the Chairmans evening. I have to host the evening and I have a great one planned (even if I do say so myself). The bar will be open and I will be providing nibbles etc, we will have some special visitors who will give a talk and then we will get to take some pics too! More details to follow 🙂

The 29th April is the AGM, this is your chance to have your say on how the club is run, if you have any proposals these need to be posted on the notice board well in advance so get thinking now and ask a member of the committee if you want to know more on how it works etc.

Have a great day and I will see you tomorrow night.

Weekly Update 2014-03-17

Hi All,

Lots of things to fill you in on this week so without further a do I’d best get on with it…

First up; you’ve all submitted your pictures for the Exhibition and the judging is taking place this weekend. Well the exciting news is that Andrew has secured a space in Jackson square for us toe exhibit the winners. We will need to work fast though and if you image wins a category we will require a high res digital copy (not the re-sized image used for projected competitions) so they can be printed ASAP. It needs to be the original image and not the smaller versions as these images will be printed LARGE.

Following on from the exhibition we have the annual dinner and prize giving evening. Saturday 26th April 2014, 7 for 7.30pm start.  It’s always a nice event. It’s held at Great Hadham golf club where we get a good meal and we have a slide show of all images entered and the judge attends as our guest.  The price is £22.00 per person, partners are of course invited.
If you are interested in the meal please would you select your choice of menu and return with the money no later than 15th April.  Cheques made payable to Bishops Stortford Camera Club.  Please include the name of the person with each choice.   Please hand to Jean.

  • Pear & Stilton Salad
  • Prawn Cocktail

Main Course

  • Beef Bourguignonne / vegetables/ New potatoes
  • Poached Salmon / vegetables/ New potatoes
  • Vegetarian Dish

  • Vanilla Creme Brulee
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce
  • Tea/coffee/Mints

This week at club is our very own Kevin Scott who will be giving us a talk with a selection of images on ‘Kilimanjaro and safari‘.  Looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

I have also had this message from Jonathon; “Emma last Sunday I was lucky enough to go the Fens Falconry Centre for what was probably the best photographic experience that I have ever had.  It differs to other Other Falconry / Bird of Prey centres in so much that it is really for photographers, and therefore the opportunities for a great image are amazing. I am trying to negotiate a group booking for BSCC,  it will be at a weekend hopefully prior to holiday season, and will probably run from around 1230 to 1630” Jonathon would like an idea of numbers so if you are interested please let us know

A big thanks to everyone who supported the quiz night on Saturday, I am pleased to report that we made a total of £500 profit for club funds.

Finally I have volunteered my services this Saturday to take photos at the ball in aid of breast cancer support in Stansted. I still need some helpers so if you would like to do some work for charity whilst learning some new skills please give me a shout.

Speak soon

Sunday Greetings

Evening everyone,

Hope you have had a good week, how’s the light trails homework coming? Don’t forget to post any pictures either on the BSCC Flickr page or the Facebook page. Both sites are great for getting/sharing tips between club nights so please feel free to make use of them both. Anyhoo, quick one tonight, not much to report;

One quick request; if you took part in the studio club this time, please upload your images to Dropbox so we can distribute them to our sitters.

Onto this Tuesday, should be a great evening with Eric Renno aka Tip Squirrel paying us a visit; visitors who may be interested in Photoshop are more than welcome, all we ask is £2 per person.

See you there

Spring into action

Well its the end of a (finally) lovely sunny Sunday. Hope you all managed to get out and about with your cameras. I went to Cambridge and it was just lovely…roll on spring!

Anyway camera club business:

First up Kevin has messaged me regarding a potential deal on 40cm x 50cm mounting card. The owner of the shop has said he would do a deal if we put a large order in. He will require 30 plus sheets to be ordered, he will pre-cut them to 40cm x 50cm and they will be somewhere around £1.20 each, but not confirmed yet. I will have a sign up sheet at the welcome desk on tuesday, please put your name and how many sheets you would like and then we can see if we have enough people/orders to make it work. Thanks Kevin!

Next its the second meeting of studio club on Saturday, Brian has sent out a seperate email regarding this, please let Brian or myself know if you have any questions. If you are not booked onto this, its now too late, but please see Brian to get your name on the list for the next one.

Please bring your money for the sweatshirts/fleeces on Tuesday. You still have time to place an order as I will be sending it off at the end of the week. They will have the club logo embroidered on the front (with the added option of adding further text if you wish). The prices are £12.99 for the sweatshirt and £16.00 for the zip up fleece. They are available in Navy, Black or Grey.

This is your last chance to get booked on the weekend away too. Friday 23rd May – Monday 26th May. This year we are going to the Isle of Wight. We will be staying at The Bembridge Coast Hotel. The weekend will cost £230 per person (approx) which will include 3 nights, with dinner, bed and breakfast. The ferry is half price at £45 per car return. (there are plenty of spaces/lifts being offered). If you are still unsure please have a chat with us, there are lots of new members already booked on. It really is a good weekend and a great way to get to know each other better as well as picking up invaluable tips. If you have reserved your place please bring £30 per person deposit on tuesday, the balance is due the first week of April.

A quick date for your diaries: Saturday 15th March will be the annual BSCC fundraising quiz night. Its always a fun evening and raises much needed funds for the club. Its only £8.50 per ticket and includes a ploughman’s supper. At this stage I need to know how many people you have in your team.

Finally David has produced a note to help us all out with the forthcoming Photo Task and the Peter Chasteney competition. If you are yet to enter anything this year these could be for you.

See you all Tuesday! Its the next round of the print competitions – both monochrome and colour. The judge is Ron Tear and he always provides an interesting evening of judging.

Happy New Year

Well hello everyone and happy Sunday,

First up may I wish you all a belated Happy New Year. I hope you are looking forward to the second half of the season as much as I am! There are lots of things to look forward to: the concluding rounds of all the competitions, more lectures and, of course, our annual weekend away (more about that later) and much more.

Ok, to business: seeing as this is the first update of the new year I have a lot to cover!

We had a request from a few members that they would like to purchase a club sweatshirt/fleece. You ask, we deliver! Therefore I am pleased to tell you that I am taking orders for Sweatshirts and Zip up Fleeces. They will have the club logo embroidered on the front (with the added option of adding further text if you wish – e.g. Glyn Dewis stylee ‘PHOTOGRAPHER’ across the back.) The prices are £12.99 for the sweatshirt and £16.00 for the zip up fleece. They are available in Navy, Black or Grey.

This week sees the third round of the digitally projected image competition. Come along, whether you have images in or not. It’s always a cracking night and it’s nice to see that those new members who joined us part way through the season are submitting images too.

The photo of the month competition continues and I’m pleased to announce that the winner this month is Jonathon Saul, with his cracking image, ‘Robin on Christmas Day’. You can view the image here:

The 8th of February sees the second meeting of the BSCC studio club. This was the brainchild of Brian and the first one was a great success. Basically we hire the studios at Menor and the cost is divided between all attendees. Everyone gets plenty of time to use the lights etc. The next session is already full, so if you are interested in this in the future please speak to Brian so you don’t miss out next time.

It’s that time of year again when I’m starting to think of the weekend away. I need to start getting an ideas of numbers. So if you would like to come/want to know more information please get in contact. This year we are going to the Isle of Wight. We will be staying at: The Bembridge Coast Hotel. I will have a rough estimate of cost on Tuesday, which will include 3 nights, with dinner, bed and breakfast. You will need to factor in the cost of the ferry too.

A quick date for your diaries: Saturday 15th March will be the annual BSCC fundraising quiz night. Its always a fun evening and raises much needed funds for the club. Its only £8.00 per ticket and includes a ploughman’s supper.

In other news we’ve had appeal from Derek Hinge (Rev at St Michaels church) who asked if any club members know of any companies who are able to convert a sizeable collection of slides to DVD for a reasonable price.

Finally, a huge well done to Andrew for putting together the calendar for the Tourist Information Centre, as well to all of those who had images in it. The big news is IT’S SOLD OUT! So, get snapping and get some images in and around the town throughout the coming seasons and you could be in next year’s sell-out calendar! Who knows, it could be BSCC giving One Direction a run for their money next Christmas. lol

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday night.

I’m Back

Hi everyone,

It’s Sunday so I guess it’s weekly update time:

I’m writing this while sat on the tube, heading home after a great day out with the camera club in London. We decided to head into the city, which was surprisingly active for a Sunday, with workmen and fellow photographers out and about.

We headed towards Trafalgar Square and the National Portrait Gallery, where we visited the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize Exhibition. It was really inspiring and refreshing to see such a diverse range of styles and subjects. Based on the content of the exhibition, Brian observed: “If you want to win a prize, don’t let your subject smile!”

Next, we headed to the embankment where we watched the sunset, explored the Christmas markets and had a delicious pizza. I will set up an album on the facebook group for people, so you can view our pictures.

So, onto Tuesday: its the Christmas social, which is always a nice evening. The bar will be open and it’s a ‘bring and share’ buffet. Please bring either sweet or savoury finger food. We normally have some sort of quiz too.

We have a communal club card that you are invited to sign. (instead of sending individual cards) so please make a donation. All monies go into club funds.

I’m pleased to announce that the ‘photo of the month’ goes to Karen Rainbird for her image ‘Freezing Wine‘. She gets the honour of her picture hanging in the window of Photosound for the month. Congrats, its well deserved!

Brian is sat next to me and I asked him of he had anything to add. He said: “Tell them Brian likes sausage rolls!” lol! He also said that if anyone would like to meet on the following Tuesday (17th) he is happy to arrange a meet up for star pictures/light trails etc and a swift festive half in the pub. Just let him know if you are interested.

See you Tuesday!
