Photowalk 2014

We are holding our event in this year’s Scott Kelby Photowalk in Colchester. to take part you need to

R E G I S T E R

which will let you enter the competitions as well.

Colchester is a gem of a place which is largely ignored, one of the trading cities of the Hanseatic league, it has been here since Roman times.  We’re just going to take the briefest outsider’s view but will hopefully trigger enough interest for people to want to come back

Bank Holiday Week

Hi all

I’m on holiday this week, so Mark is going to lead the evening tomorrow. The plan is a walk around Hatfield Forest, meeting at the first car park at 7:30pm. If it’s raining then we will meet in the Green Man pub in Takeley and then if it dries up we can still get out to the forest. Have fun!

Soldiers and Fire

Hi all

This week is ‘soldiers and fire’. After much hunting I think we have found a location that is safe and where we are allowed replica guns at HECCSport, Sawbridgeworth, CM21 0LL.

Due to the hot weather I’m not going to do any ‘fire,’ now, but Steve is going to dress up in full Army gear and hopefully give us some great moody shots with an authentic setting as well. The location is Tharbies Farm, Rook End, High Wych.

Additionally tonight, Frank has asked for the following to be shared:-

“Yep, I’ve done it, I’ve got an 810.
This means that I have a D800E for sale for £1,300.00 inc. VAT.
The camera has 4,800 actuations, boxed as new – nothing missing.”

Ongoing Summer Programme

Kniphofia Vincent Lepage (print)Hi all,

This Tuesday we are meeting at Hopleys garden centre in Much Hadham at 7:30pm. Don’t worry if you are running late as it will be easy to find us.

We get the full run of the gardens and nursery so there are lots of great photo opportunities and I highly recommend bringing your macro lenses if you have them.

They opened the coffee shop for us last year as well, but I don’t want to make assumptions that they will do the same this year.

On a separate note, if anyone has an iPad 2 and uses CF memory cards in their camera, Andrew has an adapter which can read your pictures onto your tablet for sale – it also does SD and miniSD cards, and USB.

Early Update

Hi everyone,

This week I’m sending out the info about Tuesday a bit early as I’m in Norfolk this weekend and well, as for phone signal they are in the dark ages!  This Tuesday we are meeting by the cricket club on the cricket fields, Cricketfield Lane, Bishop’s Stortford, CM23 2SR at 7:30pm.  You should be able to park along the road or in the cricket club car park as long as there is not an event on.

The plan for the evening is outside portraiture and indivisible background techniques, so if you have got an off camera flash please bring it with you and if not, maybe a reflector (even card and tinfoil will work).

Here is a link to Glyn Dewis’ technique

Happy New Year

Well hello everyone and happy Sunday,

First up may I wish you all a belated Happy New Year. I hope you are looking forward to the second half of the season as much as I am! There are lots of things to look forward to: the concluding rounds of all the competitions, more lectures and, of course, our annual weekend away (more about that later) and much more.

Ok, to business: seeing as this is the first update of the new year I have a lot to cover!

We had a request from a few members that they would like to purchase a club sweatshirt/fleece. You ask, we deliver! Therefore I am pleased to tell you that I am taking orders for Sweatshirts and Zip up Fleeces. They will have the club logo embroidered on the front (with the added option of adding further text if you wish – e.g. Glyn Dewis stylee ‘PHOTOGRAPHER’ across the back.) The prices are £12.99 for the sweatshirt and £16.00 for the zip up fleece. They are available in Navy, Black or Grey.

This week sees the third round of the digitally projected image competition. Come along, whether you have images in or not. It’s always a cracking night and it’s nice to see that those new members who joined us part way through the season are submitting images too.

The photo of the month competition continues and I’m pleased to announce that the winner this month is Jonathon Saul, with his cracking image, ‘Robin on Christmas Day’. You can view the image here:

The 8th of February sees the second meeting of the BSCC studio club. This was the brainchild of Brian and the first one was a great success. Basically we hire the studios at Menor and the cost is divided between all attendees. Everyone gets plenty of time to use the lights etc. The next session is already full, so if you are interested in this in the future please speak to Brian so you don’t miss out next time.

It’s that time of year again when I’m starting to think of the weekend away. I need to start getting an ideas of numbers. So if you would like to come/want to know more information please get in contact. This year we are going to the Isle of Wight. We will be staying at: The Bembridge Coast Hotel. I will have a rough estimate of cost on Tuesday, which will include 3 nights, with dinner, bed and breakfast. You will need to factor in the cost of the ferry too.

A quick date for your diaries: Saturday 15th March will be the annual BSCC fundraising quiz night. Its always a fun evening and raises much needed funds for the club. Its only £8.00 per ticket and includes a ploughman’s supper.

In other news we’ve had appeal from Derek Hinge (Rev at St Michaels church) who asked if any club members know of any companies who are able to convert a sizeable collection of slides to DVD for a reasonable price.

Finally, a huge well done to Andrew for putting together the calendar for the Tourist Information Centre, as well to all of those who had images in it. The big news is IT’S SOLD OUT! So, get snapping and get some images in and around the town throughout the coming seasons and you could be in next year’s sell-out calendar! Who knows, it could be BSCC giving One Direction a run for their money next Christmas. lol

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday night.

New Year Dawn 2013, Ash Valley

With the end of the year rapidly approaching, and the nights still seeming to get darker, it’s time for a quick festive challenge or two.

  • Photograph Street revellers, especially those all dressed up, either in finery or fun
  • Then there’s Scot Baston’s New Year Dawn challenge on Flickr. Dawn is 8:07am here this year

Looking forward to seeing what you can do on the club Flickr group

Hi all. I hope you’ve enjoyed a nice weekend.

Yesterday, I went on a great photowalk in Brighton organised by Glyn Dewis, who is a photographer, retoucher and trainer and will be a speaker at our Club on November 12th. I learnt a lot from the group during the walkabout and although that was cut short by the rain, it struck me how beneficial the social in the bar afterwards was too. I met some very like minded people and picked up some great new contacts as well as a potential new member. It was fascinating how different people interpreted situations differently from a photographic perspective.

So, if you get chance to go on an event, such as the World Wide Photo Walk on the 5th October, or any other social, I would highly recommend it.

This is the last week of the summer programme and we are going to meet at Goose Lane, Wright’s Green (map attached) at 7:45pm on Tuesday to do some light trails over the motorway. You will need a tripod but if you haven’t got one still come along as there are always some spares floating about.

I have included a link for a great tutorial about light trails.

This week I will also give out copies of the new programme that Cathanne has produced, in advance of the new season starting next week . I am happy to start collecting subscriptions too, for anyone wanting to beat the rush on the first night back!

By the way, Sandy has sent a mail saying that Stansted Windmill is open this weekend (including tomorrow before you tell me I’m a bit late), so that may be a great photo opportunity.

So that’s it from me for a while as Emma is back next week.

See you on Tuesday.

Weekly Update

Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson

Hi everyone,

With Emma away in a ‘not so warm’ part of the world, it has fallen to me to sent out this week’s email.

Firstly, I would like to say a big “thank you” to Mark for organising last Tuesday’s meet-up at Doctors Pond, Dunmow. Although we did not get a great sunset, we did have a great time and six new people came along. Thank you everyone for giving them a warm welcome.

This week we are going to try taking some low light architectural pictures in Bishop’s Stortford. We will meet at the area outside Zizzi and Baroosh Tuesday at 7:45pm. Please bring your tripods. Cable releases would be useful as well, if you have them.

I have included a couple of links below to give you some bedtime reading on low night photography:-

Night photography tips for the architectural photographer

10 night photography tutorials for you to try

I have no notices from anyone this week, so I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Weekly update 2013-07-15

Ema EvansHi everyone,

Hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine. I photographed my first wedding on Saturday which was nerve wracking to say the least! Not easy in this heat but I think the bride will be happy.

Anyway, not much to report this week, two main things;

Firstly Tuesday night, we left a space in the summer programme to repeat anything that had been rained off. Amazingly that hasn’t happened this year, so we have last minute plan: Jonathon has kindly invited us over to his place in Much Hadham and has a few interesting spots to show us. He is going to let us photograph his wood shed and the stream. Then he has a great location for sunsets near the bluebell woods.

If we can meet at Jonathon’s at 7.45. The address is;

Little Rustics
Widford Road
Much Hadham
SG10 6AT

Many thanks Jonathon.

Secondly I have a day trip in the diary for this Saturday (20th). I was thinking of a day out in Cambridge. Let me know if you are interested in coming and I can let you all know the details. We will probably meet at the bus stop at the Trumpington park and ride, but we can car share too from bishops stortford.

Don’t forget to add your pics to the Flickr/Facebook page to be considered for photo of the month.

See you all soon

Emma xx
